A History of Light and Celebration

From humble beginnings to the dazzling revival — the Exeter Carnival story.

Early Days

The Exeter Carnival has roots going back to the mid-20th century, when local community groups would organise processions through the city streets, bringing together floats, bands, and entertainers in a celebration of community spirit.

The Golden Years

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Exeter Carnival grew into one of the most anticipated events in Devon's calendar. Thousands lined the streets to watch illuminated floats, costumed performers, and marching bands parade through the city centre.

1998 — The Last Carnival

After decades of successful events, the Exeter Carnival held its final procession in 1998. Rising costs, logistical challenges, and changing times brought the beloved tradition to a pause that would last nearly a quarter of a century.

2022 — The Revival

On Saturday 26th November 2022, Carnival returned to Exeter after 24 years! InExeter, the Business Improvement District for Exeter City Centre, hosted an illuminated carnival in the heart of Exeter which included light up acts, floats and bands. The revival was met with tremendous enthusiasm from the community.

The Future

With the success of the 2022 revival, plans are underway to make the Exeter Carnival a regular fixture in the city's event calendar once again. Follow our social media channels for the latest news on upcoming events.
